History of the building

History of the building

Earliest records show that Balmacara estate was owned by the MacKenzies of Seaforth until 1807 when it was acquired by Sir Hugh Innes. In 1853 it was sold to Alexander Matheson MP for Ardross and he subsequently sold to Sir Daniel Hamilton in 1919.

Sir Daniel Hamilton, politician, social reformist and philanthropist, was an interesting figure who bequeathed his the estate to be administered for the good of the people of the Highlands.

Originally, the Mains housed the local cattlemen, who worked the estate land. Balmacara House, near by, was built in 1861, was an estate home. It became a farming school after Lady Hamilton died and is now leased by the Highland Regional Council.

The road to the Isle of Skye used to finish only a few hundred yards away and Ferry Cottage was a waiting and coffee room for passangers waiting for the ferry.

In 1931 Gandhi is said to have stayed as a guest of Sir Daniel Hamilton and quite possibly paddled on the beach at Balmacara!
